Israel’s Unfinished Promise: Building a Shared Society
Jeremy Burton, JCRC of Boston Executive Director and host of the Boston Jewish Now podcast, welcomed Mohammad Darawshe, Director of Strategy for Givat Haviva, to the studio for a 30-minute conversation about Jewish-Arab relations in Israel.
Israel’s Declaration of Independence promised political and social equality to all its citizens. What will it take to make that promise a reality for Jewish and Arab Israelis? On this episode of Boston Jewish Now, Burton spoke with Darawshe, about what it means to move beyond coexistence and build a country in which Jewish and Arab citizens can thrive together. From bringing thousands of Jewish and Arab students together, placing Arab teachers in Jewish schools and Jewish teachers in Arab schools, creating partnerships between neighboring municipalities, and opening pathways into higher education and hi-tech careers, Givat Haviva is putting that vision into practice.
Burton, who also is a member of the Friends of Givat Haviva Board, and Darawshe explore why these efforts matter and what both communities must do to realize Israel’s founding promise.
