Hebrew Language Enrichment

Hebrew Language Enrichment

Program Overview

Givat Haviva’s Hebrew Language Enrichment Program is designed to improve Hebrew language skills among Palestinian citizens of Israel, recognizing the critical role Hebrew plays in their academic, social, and professional success. Despite the importance of Arabic in maintaining cultural identity, proficiency in Hebrew is essential for full participation in Israeli society. Unfortunately, many Arab graduates lack the necessary Hebrew skills, creating barriers to higher education and economic inclusion.

Our program, Yihyeh B’seder, specifically targets middle school students, focusing on boosting their spoken Hebrew skills and confidence before they enter high school, where language proficiency significantly impacts their future opportunities.

Countering Racism and Fostering a Shared Society

Language enrichment goes hand in hand with cultural awareness. By integrating Jewish teachers into Arab classrooms, the program not only enhances language skills but also fosters mutual understanding and breaks down stereotypes. Studies have shown that exposure to teachers from different cultural backgrounds positively influences students' attitudes. Our experience confirms that Jewish teachers in Arab schools create valuable connections in an atmosphere often marked by mutual suspicion.

How the Program Works

Yihyeh B’seder is a three-year program for 7th, 8th, and 9th graders, focusing on spoken Hebrew relevant to everyday life. Lessons are delivered through an interactive platform, and participating schools also hold a Hebrew Enrichment Day with student presentations and activities. The presence of Jewish teachers in these schools impacts entire communities, promoting inclusion in otherwise segregated environments.

Vision and Goals

Yihyeh B’seder envisions a future where Palestinian citizens of Israel are linguistically and culturally integrated into higher education and broader society while celebrating their own heritage. This integration will open more opportunities for advancement, contributing to a shared society in Israel.

The program aims to:

  1. Develop innovative materials to improve Arab students’ Hebrew language and cultural knowledge.
  2. Encourage ongoing education for Hebrew language teachers to better convey language and culture.
  3. Increase the number of Arab youth proficient in spoken Hebrew and prepared for societal integration.
  4. Enhance familiarity and understanding between Jewish and Arab educators.

Teacher Recruitment, Training, and Support:

Teachers recruited for this program are native Hebrew speakers, certified by the Ministry of Education. Given the unique challenges of teaching in a different cultural environment, the recruitment process is rigorous. Teachers undergo preliminary training and ongoing workshops, with veteran educators sharing their experiences.

Mentoring Program

Each Jewish teacher is paired with an Arab teacher who serves as a mentor, helping them navigate the school's cultural environment. This mentorship covers everything from school procedures to cultural nuances, fostering a collaborative learning experience for both teachers.

Curriculum and Pedagogical Development

The program uses original, online pedagogical materials designed to help students acquire practical Hebrew language skills. Recognizing the challenges in areas with limited internet access, we have also developed a complete offline curriculum to ensure consistent and effective teaching.

Recent Developments Since October 7th

In the wake of recent conflicts, the demand for this program has surged, highlighting its importance in maintaining positive interactions between Jewish and Arab communities. Despite national tensions, the program continued, demonstrating its resilience and value. Moving forward, we plan to expand and adapt the program to meet new challenges and ensure its continued success.

Program Administration and Management

The program is managed by a dedicated team of educators and coordinators who oversee all aspects, from teacher support to curriculum development. We conduct regular assessments and maintain strong relationships with the Ministry of Education to ensure the program’s effectiveness.

Program Beneficiaries

The program reaches thousands of Arab students annually, with Jewish teachers providing weekly spoken Hebrew instruction. The success of the program is measured through student surveys and feedback from teachers, which show significant improvements in language skills, confidence, and intercultural understanding.

Program Activities

  • Weekly Hebrew Language Instruction: Delivered by Jewish teachers in Arab schools, focusing on practical language use.
  • In-Service Training for Teachers: Ongoing professional development for Jewish teachers, including workshops and seminars.
  • Mentoring and Support: Jewish teachers are paired with Arab mentors to guide them through the cultural and institutional dynamics of their schools.

Program Impact

The Hebrew Language Enrichment Program has successfully met its goals, improving students' Hebrew proficiency and their ability to integrate into Hebrew-speaking environments, both in academia and the workforce. The program also fosters greater tolerance and understanding, contributing to a more integrated and peaceful society in Israel.
